Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. I Thessalonians 5:11

Lord, Please Teach Me What to Say!

Dear Friend,

Reading through the words of consolation and desolation  the prophet Isaiah speaks to Israel, there are many marvelous sentences that seem to jump off the page!

For example, “The Sovereign Lord has given me a well-instructed tongue to know the word that sustains the weary,” Isaiah 50:4

Wow! How wonderful to know there is a word – words – that sustain the weary. It reminds me of the wonderful Job 4:4, “Your words put people on their feet!.”  

Do your words lift people, put steel in their backbones, love in their hearts and hope in their heads? Do you know words, use words, that sustain the weary. That is at the core of building one another.

Isaiah is telling us that the Lord gave him a “well-instructed” tongue. In other words, Isaiah learned the words that lift hearts and sustain the weary!

Ask the Lord who loves you to, “Please teach me what to say,” and open your ears, so that you may become aware of, and use, the words that will put people on their feet with hope in their hearts!

Scripture from the NIV

1. Reflect on Isaiah 50:4. The first half of the verse speaks of the well-instructed tongue. How may you also receive a well instructed tongue?
2. The second half of the verse speaks of God wakening you in the morning. According to the verse, why? And what does that suggest you should do when you awaken in the morning.
3. Are will willing to give this a try. For the next week, when you wake, review the people you think you will see, knowing some may enter your life you cannot anticipate. Ask God to give you the wisdom of words - so that you may strengthen the heart of each one with your words.
